In the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug–Yugra, the proportion of speakers of the Khanty, Mansi, and Nenets languages constitutes 2% of the total population (1.7 million) of the region. The languages of the indigenous peoples predominantly function within local communities, particularly in areas with concentrated populations and traditional reindeer husbandry practices among the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North. This article examines the contemporary ethno-linguistic situation in the Kondinsky district of Yugra based on the results of questionnaire surveys of indigenous small-numbered peoples residing in the area. The linguistic situation is evaluated on the basis of subjective assessments of ethno-linguistic self-identification of the Khanty and Mansi ethnic groups («Is this your native language?») and language competence («How would you rate your proficiency in your native language?»). The focus of this study is the ethno-linguistic situation in the Kondinsky district of Yugra. The purpose of the research was to describe the ethno-linguistic situation among the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North living in the Kondinsky district. Based on primary sociological data, the study aims to lay the groundwork for future interdisciplinary field studies (linguistic and sociological), focused on investigating the state and level of preservation of the native languages of the Ob-Ugric peoples in this district. The research draws on materials from monitoring surveys conducted in 2016, 2019, and 2023-2024, as well as field data collected by the author in 2014 through interviews with respondents, representatives of the Eastern Mansi group in the village of Shugur.
