Sciatica describes a widely prevalent neurological condition which is associated with pain radiating along the path of the sciatic nerve. The discomfort starts in the lumbar region, progresses to encompass the buttock and leg, and is often associated with sensations of tingling, numbness, or weakness. In Ayurveda it corresponds to Gridhrasi, one among Nanatmaja Vata Vyadhi as described in ancient texts like Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. The case study describes a 30-yr old woman patient from Pehowa village who presented with chronic low back ache radiating to left lower limb for 1-2 years with complaint of tingling in lateral three fingers and intermittent numbness. MRI showed L5-S1 disc desiccation with herniated disc at that level. The diagnosis was made as Vata-Kaphaja Gridhrasi. Line of management included Panchakarma (Vaitarana Niruha Basti, Ksheera Bala Anuvasana Basti), internal medications (Trayodashang Guggulu, Parijata Kashaya), and supportive therapies (Abhyanga and Swedana). Ayurveda-integrative treatment resulted in significant pain reduction, improvement in functional capabilities alongside restoration of neurological function. This highlights why holistic Ayurvedic principles deserve more attention when dealing with modern-day neuromuscular problems such as sciatica by providing effective alternatives or additions to conventional treatments.
