Case Studies of Successful Capacity Building in Developing Countries: Lessons for Practice and Policy

Case studies provide critical insights into the strategies that make capacity-building programs effective and sustainable. This article examines successful initiatives from Asia, Africa, and Latin America—including BRAC, One Acre Fund, Grameen Bank, the Green Belt Movement, Tostan, SEWA, Pro Mujer, and others—to identify the common factors behind their long-term success. The analysis highlights five recurring elements: community participation, integrated approaches, scalability, financial sustainability, and robust monitoring and evaluation. By synthesizing lessons from diverse contexts, the article offers a practical framework for practitioners and policymakers seeking to design and implement impactful capacity-building programs.
