Smartphone addiction (SPA) has become a prevalent issue among university students, raising concerns about its potential negative effects on cognitive functioning and mental well-being. This study examines the relationship between smartphone addiction, cognitive decline, and the mediating roles of social media usage and emotional well-being. Using a sample of 310 university students, the study found that smartphone addiction significantly negatively impacts cognitive functioning, with social media usage and perceived stress serving as partial mediators in this relationship. The results highlight that excessive social media engagement, coupled with emotional distress, exacerbates cognitive decline in smartphone-addicted individuals. The findings suggest that interventions focusing on reducing smartphone usage, managing stress, and promoting emotional well-being could help mitigate the cognitive consequences of smartphone addiction. This research underscores the need for digital wellness programs and mental health support in educational settings to promote healthier smartphone habits and enhance cognitive performance.
