This study analyzes the aspects of archaism of the archaic poems by category in the mid-Joseon period, focusing on the works related to . As a result of examining the historical development of Korean archaic poetry, the main characteristics of it in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty are as follows. First, archaic poems imitating the entire appeared. Second, many literati who served as Daejehak or were recommended to Daejehak performed as archaic poetry writers. Third, the majority of archaic poetry writers were connected by blood ties, marriages, and teacher-disciple relationships. Fourth, the archaic poems emerged as the Changhwasi that composed by a means of literati’s social intercourses. These characteristics are factors that influenced the quantitative growth of the archaic poems in the mid-Joseon Dynasty, and serve as the basis for confirming that the development of Korean archaic poems was driven by combining external influence and internal progress. The works belonging to Luji’s , imitated , maintain the style of but show the pattern of imitating by adding or subtracting the number of lines. In this study, it examines several works: Yoo Mong-in(柳夢寅)’s , Shin Heum’s , Hong Guyeon’s 18 archaic poems and Shin Choe’s . It analyzes those works, in comparison with , the aspects of adding or subtracting the number of lines, the borrowing of the phrases and the embodiment of the story, and the relatedness and uniqueness with Chinese archaic poems. Tao Yuan-ming’s borrowed some of the materials, themes, phrases and stories from the poetry of Han Wei to embody own emotions and thoughts. In his poems, it has two aspects related to imitating of : first, the object of imitation is unclear, but it includes some phrases or stories from , and second, it imitates several specific poems of . Accordingly, this study selects some works which are archaic poems ‘borrowing phrases or story of ’ and ‘containing poems imitating ’, and investigates the state of phrases that are borrowed from and the original poems which are the object of imitation. The works belonging to Su Shi’s which is followed the rhymes of Tao Yuan-ming’s show patterns: composed in the way of bouts-rimes of the former archaic poems, and imitated some of the phrases or stories of previous archaic poems including . In the historical development of Korean archaic poetry, the target of bouts-rimes was Chinese archaic poems until the early Joseon Dynasty. However, in the mid-Joseon Dynasty, several works using the archaic poems by the literati’s social intercourses as objects of bouts-rimes appeared. Accordingly, in this study, the works corresponding to ‘Chuhwasi(bouts-rimes of Chinese archaic poems)’ and ‘Changhwasi(bouts-rimes of the archaic poems by companions)’ are selected to examine the objects of bouts-rimes and the aspects of archaism.
