The relevance of the research is conditioned by the increasing role of sports in modern society, as well as by the necessity of accurate and adequate translation of specialized sports terminology, especially names of sports officials, when teaching English for professional and academic purposes. International competitions, the integration of Russian athletes into the global sports community and the development of academic programs in sports translation require a high level of linguistic and intercultural competence from specialists. The aim of the article is to analyze the linguistic peculiarities and translation difficulties associated with translating the names of sports officials from English into Russian and vice versa, as well as to identify effective methodological approaches to overcoming these difficulties in the educational process. Academic articles, official documents of Russian and international sports organizations, as well as practical classes in English for academic purposes held at the Research Institute of Physical Culture (St. Petersburg) were used as research materials. The methods of comparative and content analysis, linguistic and methodological analysis of texts were applied in the work. As a result of the study, the main groups of polysemic sports terms were identified and translation strategies such as literal, descriptive translation, transcription, calcification, etc. were analyzed. Special attention is paid to the lack of direct equivalents between Russian and English names of officials, which requires a deep knowledge of the specifics of each sport and the use of complex translation transformations. In conclusion, it is emphasized that effective English language teaching in the sports sphere requires a combination of linguistic analysis, intercultural communication and practice-oriented methods aimed at the formation of professional translation competence.
