Purpose This study investigates the common characteristics and values among Generation Z (Gen Z) in the workplace. It analyses the impact of leadership and the work environment conditions on job satisfaction and performance of Gen Z individuals in the luxury hotel business. The purpose of this article is to provide luxury hospitality leaders with practical insights into Gen Z’s psychology. This research offers actionable recommendations to help industry professionals adapt their leadership styles and optimise performance. Design/methodology/approach For the design, both a qualitative and quantitative approach were adopted. A survey was created, tested and distributed via Google Forms to the Gen Z employees of a luxury hotel in Switzerland. The collected data were then analysed using Excel for quantitative insights and examined in combination with the qualitative inputs of the participants and the existing literature. Findings The survey results indicate that Gen Z employees in this luxury hotel in Switzerland, value personal development the most and highly appreciate autonomy, authority and work-life balance to an elevated standard. While job satisfaction is generally high, retention becomes a concern due to perceived limited opportunities for career advancement. Targeted leadership adaptations in these areas could enhance both job satisfaction and Gen Z employee retention. Originality/value This study provides hospitality professionals with unique insights, augmenting the existing body of knowledge using previous literature to provide actionable recommendations for increased engagement with Gen Z individuals through leadership, provision of a supportive environment with career opportunities, mentorship and recognition programs, by examining the preferences of Gen Z employees in the specific case of a luxury Swiss hotel.
