Abstract

(Abstracted from J Minim Invasive Gynecol 2025;32(5):432–437) Postoperative milestones such as voiding ability are often part of discharge from the postanesthesia care unit (PACU), and failure to void passively or actively can lead to postoperative urinary retention (POUR). Incidence rates of POUR vary from 0.5% to 21.0% after minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, with the highest rates in hysterectomy patients; treatment includes recatheterization and bladder rest, which can lead to unpleasant side effects such as urinary tract infection (UTI) and slow recovery.
