Abstract Effective dewatering of water-based drilling fluids is essential for minimizing environmental impact, reducing operational costs, and enhancing drilling efficiency. This paper presents a strategic approach to the design and implementation of a high-performance dewatering system tailored for water-based muds (WBMs). The approach emphasizes the integration of fluid properties analysis, selection of optimal chemical additives, equipment configuration, and real-time process monitoring. By aligning engineering principles with practical field requirements, the framework ensures efficient solids-liquid separation, promotes recycling of base fluids, and reduces waste disposal volumes. The study further explores challenges encountered in various drilling environments and proposes adaptive solutions through case-based evaluations. The results highlight the effectiveness of a systems-based methodology in achieving operational reliability, regulatory compliance, and environmental sustainability.
