Contemporary reality has led to new leadership styles which motivate teachers and promote their job development and school effectiveness. Transformational leadership stands out between the earliest leadership theories and a great ammount of theoreticals studied thiw phenomenon. the aim of this research was to explore the leadership style of the Headmasters in secondary education schools in the Regional Unit of Serres. The research population constisted of 177 teachers who work in the above school units. Avolio and Bass"s Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ, 2004) was used to determine leadership style. It was verified that teachers acknowledge -as far as their Headmaster is concerned- the characteristics of a transformational leader most of the times, fewer times those of a transactional leader, and seldom those of someone who is passive/laissez-faire. The correlation analysis showed that the transformational style displays a strong positive correlation with all leadership outcomes. This kind of leaders notably motivate teachers to put extra effort, promote effectiveness and generate high levels of job satisfaction.
