Abstract The development of forest research is an important chapter of American forestry history. Its record will doubtless be accumulated in the stories of regional development. The writer makes a contribution to this record for a region where forest research has abundantly proved its mettle. The problems research has met in California are largely those of the conntry as a whole, thns giving this article more than state-wide significance.
