The larvae and adults of 962 African, mostly South African, Lepidoptera species reared by the Caterpillar Rearing Group (CRG) are illustrated together with pertinent host information. This constitutes a substantial rapid growth in the knowledge of the early stages of African Lepidoptera. The majority of these are illustrated for the first time. The methods developed and employed for the establishment and maintenance of the highly successful CRG are described in some detail. The results are summarised and discussed. It is shown that the combination of modern communication and imaging techniques with proper scientific methods and discipline does allow for the rapid expansion of fundamental biological knowledge at low cost.
