Abstract In 1903 the federal government started a large scale afforestation project on the sandhills of Nebraska. Early plantings on this project were very successful and have now developed into well-stocked plantations about 40 feet in height. Since it appeared logical that these man-made forests might have some effect on climate within the afforested areas, weather instruments were located both within and outside a plantation. The analysis of the nine years of records which are now available indicate the marked effect of the forest on air and soil temperature, rainfall interception, wind movement, and evaporation.
