p style=text-align: justify;The paper provides an overview of the impact of shielding gases of conventional and advanced welding processes with regard to the three-fold sustainability approach (economic, environmental and social). The aim of the paper is to review the available literature on the environmental impact of advanced welding technologies applied to steels. The literature review provides a brief introduction to the main welding processes and techniques including TIG welding, MIG welding, laser beam welding and the LCA method. A comparison is presented in terms of environmental impact as well as negative health impacts of welders for the most commonly used welding materials. The environmental issue is presented from the perspective of welding sustainability and reduction of environmental pollution, with a presentation of the impact of welding techniques. The link between a sustainable welding process and the implementation of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards as well as the US publication of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) exposure standards for various components in welding fumes and gases is presented. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for achieving an environmentally sustainable welding process are given./p
