This paper has evaluated the satellite precipitation products (SPPs) of Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and also Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) products in Australia. The focus is concentrated on estimating daily precipitation, detecting extreme precipitation and monitoring meteorological droughts. For the accuracy of precipitation estimation, the median relative bias is respectively −31.17% and −16.61% for the IMERG Early V06 and V07 products, respectively −29.11% and −12.77% for the IMERG Late V06 and V07 products, respectively −7.83% and −7.46% for the IMERG Final V06 and V07 products and respectively 4.73% and 6.05% for the GSMaP-Gauge-NRT and GSMaP Gauge products. While the performance exhibits considerable spatial variation, the critical success index for the detection of extreme precipitation and the Kling-Gupta efficiency for the monitoring of meteorological droughts are markedly improved from IMERG V06 to V07. Overall, the evaluation provides useful information for hydrological applications of SPPs.
