Abstract Faced with the current needs for energy conservation, consider the Brazilian modernist buildings as examples to be considered in view of the technical solutions adopted in the design process that meet the Bioclimatic Project. In this sense, the main objective of this article is to carry out an analysis about the use of bioclimatic strategies in the historical, urban and building context of Rio de Janeiro. For that, the review methodology was used to evaluate the performance of the project executed by the modernist architect Lúcio Costa, the Nova Cintra Building and its surroundings known as Parque Guinle, built in 1948. It is worth mentioning that the building has a series of bioclimatic strategies applied to what the bioclimatic zone in which it is located needs. From a historical verification of projects carried out using the mentioned strategies, as well as bibliographic data extracted from the main publications bases, applied to the projects of the architect Lúcio Costa. The methodology used in this investigation addresses: (i) historical research on the topic of modernist bioclimatic architecture; (ii) narrative review about the architect Lúcio Costa; (iii) bibliographic review on problematic issues to the tripod of sustainability, as well as architectural references on similar projects by the same architect; (iv) survey of climatic data from the region and from the building itself, to establish the historical analysis.
