The importance of lecture as a genre of academic discourse. Review of the monograph by I. P. Khutyz “Genres of discourse of the academic environment. The traditional and the new”

This review highly appreciates the monograph by I. P. Khutyz “Genres of discourse of the academic environment. The Traditional and the New”, whose significant part is devoted to the lecture as a special genre of academic 209 discourse capable of transmitting a significant amount of information to the required number of listeners in a relatively short time. It is especially true for lectures posted on university websites, as well as on various educational platforms. The following characteristics of the lecture as a type of institutional communication are considered: focus and strategy, structurality and phase, a certain ritualism and predictability, spontaneity and heterogeneity, integrity and fragmentation. Much attention is paid to the structural organization of the lecture discourse, its macrostructure, including meaningful components, which in turn include mandatory and optional episodes. The interrelation of the structural characteristics of the lecture with the quality of information assimilation by students is argued. I. P. Khutyz also explores the issues of interactivity necessary to establish contact with the audience, suggests means aimed at dialogizing the lecture discourse, points to techniques for generating interactivity using questions, personal narrative, metaphors and idioms. The functions of questions in the lecture structure are considered in detail. In addition, the author identifies the metadiscursive means involved in the organization of the lecture, characterizes its paralinguistic and kinesic components. Studying the issues of structurality and phase of the lecture, the author focuses on crosscultural features of the lecture. The undoubted relevance, novelty, originality of interpretations, theoretical and practical significance of the monograph make it possible to use it not only for scientific but also for linguistic and pragmatic purposes.
