The article aims to consider the functioning patterns of interjectional phraseological units (IPUs) in the situation of causation of emotional modification in Spanish. The material for the study was comprised by 2000 tokens containing an IPU. They were selected using continuous and directed sampling. Further data processing was performed using component analysis, contextual analysis and corpus method. As a result, the classification of interjectional phraseological units was developed in accordance with the specifics of the emotion verbalized: positive modification, negative modification, ambivalent ones, and multivalent ones. The first group included 20 IPUs expressing joy and approval. The IPUs with the meaning of anger, annoyance, condemnation were distributed to the group of negative modification of the emotional state. The IPUs that, depending on the context, revealed one of two emotions – positive or negative – were interpreted as ambivalent IPUs. Finally, the IPUs that could simultaneously verbalize various emotions were gathered in multivalent group. Positive IPUs accounted for 15% of all analyzed IPUs, negative – 67%, ambivalent – 17%, multivalent – 1%. The data analysis enables to conclude that there is an interaction between the categories of emotivity and causation in the functioning of interjectional phraseological units.
