At the heart of the fourth industrial revolution, or industry 4.0 is the digital transformation of the manufacturing processes. The implementation of networks, data analytics and management, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things promises to improve current manufacturing methods and deliver a higher degree of value to the industry supply chain. With the growing amount of attention to Industry 4.0, several industries, including the metal casting industry, have been seeking and researching potential implementations of this critical revolution. In particular, the metal casting industry supplies products that require an elevated level of quality such as aircraft engine components and ship propellers, making the metal casting industry an excellent opportunity for implementing Industry 4.0. While this research field continues to expand, the organization of this field has left much to be desired. This paper provides a systematic review of the most common methods and techniques of the implementation of industry 4.0 into the metal casting industry. The reviewed articles are grouped into categories based on their area of implementation including energy efficiency, casting quality, and data management. The distribution of the articles is analyzed, and potential opportunities and industry trends are also discussed, highlighting and documenting the digital transformation of this industry.
