As non-profit organizations increasingly adopt digital platforms for volunteer management, legal considerations have become central to ensuring compliance, accountability, and trust. This article examines the legal frameworks and risks associated with digital volunteer engagement, with a focus on volunteer agreements, liability, insurance, intellectual property, and jurisdictional challenges. Particular attention is given to data protection regulations, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and emerging legislation in Asia and other regions. Best practices for safeguarding volunteer data—such as encryption, access control, and staff training—are explored alongside the importance of transparent privacy policies. Case illustrations highlight how lapses in compliance can result in reputational and financial damage, while robust legal frameworks strengthen volunteer trust and organizational resilience. For practitioners, this study provides actionable guidance on risk management and policy design; for scholars, it situates digital volunteer management within broader debates on law, technology, and civil society.
