ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: During the interim period of fabrication of definitive prosthesis, it is necessary that provisional restorative materials must have adequate strength to perform the masticatory function. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the flexural strength of provisional restorative material fabricated using DPI tooth moulding acrylic powder, Protemp 4, and 3D printed resin. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro comparative study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty two samples were divided into three groups with 12 samples in each group (n=12). Group 1 –DPI tooth moulding acrylic powder ;Group 2-Protemp 4 and Group 3- 3D printed resin. A block of dimension (17x5.5x6 mm) was used to fabricate samples for flexural strength. Then the samples were loaded under compression in a Universal testing machine and the load to fracture the specimens was recorded and flexural strength was evaluated. Then the results were tabulated and statistical analysis was done. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: One way ANOVA, Student T test and Post hoc test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The results of the study showed that Bisacryl composite (Protemp 4) (204.79 N/mm2) had the highest flexural strength compared to 3D printed resin (191.31 N/mm2) and DPI tooth moulding acrylic powder (162.91N/mm2). CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that 3D printed resin and bisacryl composite (Protemp 4) are better provisional restorative materials when flexural strength is considered and Protemp 4 can be used in posterior regions where increased strength of material is needed, to withstand occlusal forces. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Enables the clinician to provide a better provisional restorative material with good flexural strength to withstand forces of mastication.
