Abstract

Abstract This study examines the production, dissemination, collaboration, and thematic dynamics of Philippine research from 2016 to 2023, situating it within the center–periphery framework of global knowledge production. Using scientometric analyses of research output, impact metrics, publication venues, international collaborations, thematic evolution, strategic diagrams, and stability indices, the findings reveal a system characterized by disparity, adaptability, and resilience. Research production and citation impact remain highly concentrated in a few elite universities—particularly the UP system, DLSU, and ADMU—illustrating the Matthew Effect and reinforcing domestic inequalities between Metro Manila–based institutions and regional SUCs. Publication patterns highlight dependence on Global North outlets for visibility, reflecting epistemic dependence, while local journals continue to occupy peripheral positions in the global publishing hierarchy. Collaboration analysis shows strong ties with the United States and Europe, providing legitimacy and resources but reinforcing asymmetries, alongside growing Asia-Pacific linkages that signal diversification and South–South cooperation. Thematic analyses reveal adaptive responses to crises, with the COVID-19 pandemic driving a surge in health and epidemiology research, while stability indices (0.87 and 0.85) demonstrate resilience in maintaining core strengths in agriculture, engineering, and environment. Overall, the Philippine research system occupies a semi-peripheral position, simultaneously demonstrating dependence on global centers and agency in sustaining local priorities. The study underscores the need for policies that reduce institutional disparities, strengthen local publication ecosystems, foster equitable international collaboration, and embed resilience in research governance to ensure a more inclusive and globally relevant Philippine research system.
