Abstract Thinning, both precommercial and commercial, has increased rapidly since 1958 in the national forests of Oregon and Washington. Precommercial thinning of west side Douglas-fir was begun in 1961 and carried out on 8,000 acres during Fiscal Year 1966. To aid those engaged in such practices thinning guides were prepared for use on national forests, within the Douglas-fir subregion.
