Abstract All indications are that the effective practice of forestry in the future will require increasing numbers of professionals who are capable resource managers and administrators. Recent empirical data strongly suggest that Illinois students attracted to forestry are not ideally suited to playing the future complex administrative role from the standpoint of personaliy and motivation. Much more careful screening of students, expert counseling and guidance, and well advertised descriptions of role as well as job requirements by both public and private employers of professional foresters are needed.
