The relevance of the research topic is due to the need to establish the philosophical and legal origins of the Russian legal system. The article examines baptism and the associated influence of the philosophy of law of Byzantium on the Christian enlightenment and the formation of political and legal thought in Ancient Russia. It is established that the thinkers of Ancient Russia managed to solve the problems of combining strong princely power with the freedom of subjects, limiting princely power to the idea of justice, and the duties of the state in the social sphere, which laid the foundation for the formation of the philosophy of law, which determines the development of the Russian legal system up to the present.
