Abstract Free transverse vibrations of discontinuously constrained three-layer cylinders are considered. In this arrangement, the flextural vibration of the main elastic cylinder is damped using a linear viscoelastic core which is discontinuously constrained by a number of elastic segments around the circumference with both ends riveted. In the development of the analytical procedure, a sixth order differential equation, similar to the governing equation for the sandwich beam, is formulated. A parametric study is conducted and dimensionless resonant frequencies and modal loss factors for different boundary conditions are computed for a typical core loss factor and, for various shear and geometric parameters.
