Abstract An in-vivo study was conducted to determine the distribution of intimal thickening (IT) at canine PTFE anastomoses; in parallel, an in-vitro study examined the WSS distribution inside a model representative of the in-vivo graft geometry using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). The results indicate IT to be positively correlated with the reciprocal of mean WSS to some extent (R=.52, p.01). However, the type of flow field (i.e. entrance flow, stagnation point, sudden expansion) may be a key factor to whether IT develops.
