Abstract The Northeast is classified into homogeneous sub-areas based upon a variety of physical, economic, and demographic variables postulated to reflect conditions underlying timber-based activity in the region. These environments in which timber exists were differentiated so that subsequent inquiry into regional problems regarding timber-resource-based activity could be made area-specific.
