Abstract Three-year-old (3 + 0) Fraser fir seedlings lifted in early winter and spring were successfully stored in Kraft-polyethylene (K-p) bags for up to 5 months at -3°C and 4°C. Subsequent survival and growth in nursery transplant beds was equal to or better than that of plants lifted in the spring and stored briefly at 4°C before transplanting. Including root packing materials in K-p bags provided no improvement over bare-root storage, and for certain materials was detrimental. Terminal bud abortion was negligible for plants lifted in December; 18 to 31 percent for those lifted in March and April. A storage temperature of -3°C inhibited mold, particularly if plants had wet foliage. Forest Sci. 28:772-776.
