The review presents an analysis of John Burgess’s book “Why Read Pavel Florensky”, published in 2024 by the Catholic University of America. The book is written for an English-speaking audience and is intended to interest the reader in the creative and life path of the Russian philosopher, theologian and scientist. The author combines a biographical account of Florensky’s life with an overview of his key works, and the style of presentation combines academic analysis with personal memories and reflections based on the author’s experience in Russia. An important task of the author is to reveal the complex and contradictory world of his hero, to form a general idea of Florensky’s philosophical and theological ideas, as well as to introduce his audience to the world of another confessional culture. The format of the popular introduction chosen by the author determines many key characteristics of the book – its accents, structure, style and manner of presentation, the inevitable brevity (and, sometimes, even simplification) of conceptual, analytical narrative lines. Written with sincere interest and warmth, as well as simply but fascinatingly, Burgess’s book is quite capable of serving as a good introduction to the creative legacy of the Russian philosopher.
