Abstract This paper explores the implementation of speed asymmetry in rolling mills equipped with modern electric drives. A key issue addressed is the challenge of maintaining a predefined roll speed mismatch in stands with independently driven rolls. Instability of the asymmetry coefficient arises, among other factors, due to the operation of control systems regulating technological parameters such as strip thickness and tension. To stabilize the asymmetry coefficient under external disturbances, a proportional–integral (PI) asymmetry regulator is introduced into the classical structure of automatic roll speed control systems. Simulation studies conducted using the MATLAB Simulink environment confirmed the feasibility and high control performance of the proposed approach to managing speed asymmetry.
