Bridges play a crucial role in a nation's critical infrastructure. In Germany, numerous railway bridges have reached the end of their designated service life. Many of these structures, particularly historical railway bridges, require detailed assessment due to their unique characteristics, such as old steel components and riveted connections. As part of the research project RISK.twin – Intelligent Critical Technical Infrastructure 1, experimental studies are being conducted at the Institute for Structural Engineering at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBw M) on a dismantled railway underpass. This article outlines the experimental setup and presents initial findings on failure mechanisms and damage progression. Furthermore, a comparison is made between measured data and results obtained from various finite element models.
