The article is devoted to the creative heritage of the Russian social hygienist, organizer of healthcare and higher medical school, head of department of Samara State Medical University Sergei Ivanovich Stegunin (16.05.1923—07.04.2004). The leading scientific areas of research of Professor S. I. Stegunin and his school were topical issues of the theory and history of social hygiene and organization of healthcare, epidemiology of the most important non-communicable diseases, improvement of outpatient and inpatient care. S. I. Stegunin substantiated and applied the method of multivariate analysis to study the influence of a complex of risk factors on the occurrence and development of non-communicable diseases. The results of his research contributed to the deepening of the scientific and practical base of preventive medicine and medical examination. The article highlights the versatile achievements of Professor S. I. Stegunin as a teacher, scientist, organizer of healthcare, editor, public figure, popularizer of medical knowledge and publicist.
