This study explored how socio-economic status shapes children’s educational journey from the sweeper community in Kashmir. Historically marginalized, this community has endured social exclusion and discrimination, which limits their chances for upward mobility. Through observation, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews, the researcher gained critical insights into the educational experiences of sweeper community children. This study found that parents from the sweeper community face multiple interconnected challenges, including poor living conditions, occupation-related hardships and financial instability, all of which significantly impact their children’s education. Overcrowded homes and persistent noise from surrounding households create an environment that disrupts students’ learning. In response to financial challenges, teachers took the initiative to mobilize resources to assist these students. The study suggests the urgent need for holistic interventions to address these barriers, ensuring equal educational opportunities for children from the sweeper community.
