Civil engineering projects are a crucial indicator of economic performance and growth, as they significantly contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), positively affecting the economy. Several civil engineering projects often suffer from a proper handover at completion. This study closes this gap by identifying the critical handover metrics required for a successful civil engineering project. This study followed a quantitative approach. A structured questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale was used to determine the participants' responses. The collected data was analyzed. The results reveal that client satisfaction score, final inspection and sign-offs, quality assurances and controls, safety documentation compliance, time management, environmental compliance, completion documentation accuracy, and cost control efficiency are major project handover metrics in South Africa. The study's outcome provides insight for policymakers and other stakeholders in the construction industry for successful civil engineering to inform knowledge and drive policy specific to cater for the South African construction industry.
