Statistical analysis of the ratio of two variables from normal populations is very common in biology and agriculture. The inverse sine transformation which is applied to binomial proportions to make the mean and variance independent is suggested by some writers as appropriate. A simulation study was performed to determine the form of the distribution of the ratio from a knowledge of the statistics of the primary variables. The appropriate transformation, if any, was found to be log which when applied to experimental data stabilized the variance and induced normality.
