The dielectric property of a material like soil is significantly influenced by the amount of moisture present. The relationships between moisture content and dielectric constant determined for a wide variety of materials in the past are summarized in this paper. A strong correlation is demonstrated between these two parameters when moisture content is expressed in terms of weight of water per unit volume of material. The trends are basically the same for all materials. Sensors developed for moisture monitoring in soils using the dielectric property are briefly described. The related electronic concepts and definitions are also examined.
