This issue of Traffic Safety Facts presents the most current data on motor vehicle crashes. In 2023 there were an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes when 40,901 people were killed and an estimated 2,442,581 people were injured. Compared to 2022, there was a 4.3-percent decrease in the number of fatalities, and a 2.5-percent increase in the estimated number of people injured. Other key findings: The estimated number of police-reported traffic crashes increased by 3.5 percent; the fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) decreased from 1.34 in 2022 to 1.26 in 2023; there were 12,429 people killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes, a decrease of 7.6 percent; there were 11,775 fatalities in speeding-related crashes, 29 percent of total traffic fatalities and a decrease of 3 percent from 2022.
