Small Scale Industries (SSIs) play a vital role in the Indian economy due to their adaptableproduction methods, low capital requirements, and significant job creation capabilities. Theyhelp mitigate regional disparities and support cottage and traditional industries. India's robustsmall sector among developing countries is noteworthy, supported by a substantial pool ofscientific and technical talent. However, SSIs encounter sustainability challenges ineconomic, environmental, and social dimensions.Economic Sustainability involves creating resilient business models, ensuring profitability, and managing risks. This can be achieved through diversifying products and markets, enhancing operational efficiencies, and adopting cost-effective technologies. Access toaffordable financing and government incentives is also crucial.Environmental Sustainability requires SSIs to implement eco-friendly practices tominimize their environmental impact. This includes using renewable energy, establishingwaste management systems, and reducing emissions. Practices like recycling and greentechnology adoption not only conserve resources but also improve market appeal.Social Sustainability emphasizes fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities forskill development. SSIs contribute to the social fabric by providing employment andpromoting local cultures. Engaging in community development and supporting localinitiatives further enhances social sustainability. This study examines the state of SSIs in Udupi District, where the geography supports suchindustries. Most SSIs here are traditional agro and fisheries-based, with some engaged inproducing steel, engineering tools, plastic items, and cement products. Despite their potential, these industries face chronic issues and underutilization due to various reasons.
