Unilateral Lambdoid Craniosynostosis: A Single Institution’s Experience With a Rare Diagnosis

Unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis is the least common variant of craniosynostosis. Due to its rarity, the development of new techniques in treatment is limited. Less invasive surgical approaches, including distraction osteogenesis and strip craniectomy, have recently gained popularity in the treatment of all forms of craniosynostosis. These procedures have been shown to decrease intraoperative blood loss, transfusion requirements, and operative time. However, the literature is lacking regarding these treatments for unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis. Here, we present our institution’s experience with a series of 5 cases of unilateral lambdoid synostosis successfully managed with less invasive techniques of strip craniectomy with postoperative helmet therapy or posterior vault distraction.
