Three trenches were dug by hand and archaeological features partially investigated, with use of augers to greater depths. A range of features was discovered in all three trenches, spanning the Late Iron Age to Modern era but with a clear Medieval emphasis. A deep wide ditch is interpreted as evidence for the hitherto elusive eastern (river-front) defences of the Saxon burh A cluster of 11th to 12th century pits shows occupation of the site immediately after this (presumed) defensive work was slighted..
