ABSTRACT: This article examines the lives and contributions of military wives during the Second World War and the Chinese Civil War, and adopts a hybrid methodology that integrates close reading, historical contextualization, and gender studies analysis. This study takes as its objects two works by the author published in parallel -- the contemporary prose poem "The Uninscribed Medal of a Military Wife, Zhu Xiuyu" 《軍妻朱秀毓的無字勳章》 and the classical regulated verse "An Ode to the General's Wife, Madam Zhu Xiuyu" 《頌將軍夫人朱秀毓》-- and carries out an intertextual reading. Both are dedicated to commemorating the life of Madam Zhu Xiuyu (朱秀毓), wife of General Wang Puchen (王蒲臣將軍). Through contrasting yet complementary poetic forms, the two texts construct a multidimensional portrait of the wartime military wife as an emblem of endurance, moral fortitude, and unacknowledged sacrifice. The prose poem employs narrative lyricism to foreground Zhu's lived experience of displacement, maternal responsibility, and her steadfast commitment to peace amid the devastations of global and civil war. The classical poem, by contrast, distills these themes into a condensed symbolic idiom, drawing on traditional imagery to elevate Zhu's virtues into the realm of collective memory and moral exemplarity. Together, the two works illuminate the gendered dynamics of wartime labor, the invisible emotional and domestic burdens borne by military spouses, and the ways in which private devotion becomes intertwined with national history. By situating Zhu Xiuyu's story within broader discourses of loyalty, suffering, and historical remembrance, the article argues that these paired poems not only honor an individual woman but also restore visibility to the countless unnamed military wives whose contributions form the silent foundation of twentieth century Chinese wartime experience.
