The emergence of conversational Generative AI (GenAI) has fundamentally transformed the human-technology paradigm from a user-tool contract to a profound psychological engagement with algorithmic companions. This paper investigates the psychological mechanisms that drive emotional investment, conceptualizing the core phenomenon as Techno-Emotional Projection (TEP), where individuals, often seeking to fulfill unmet relational needs, project emotional significance onto the non-conscious technology. The analysis identifies a critical decoupling of trust: while Cognitive Trust is based on the functional competence of the AI, users often develop Emotional Trust, rooted in the perception of the simulated empathy and benevolence of the system, which subsequently overrides rational awareness of non-sentience and fosters deep reliance. Ethically, the paper addresses the commercial exploitation of these mechanisms through the “weaponization of anthropomorphism,” wherein developers deploy Relational Dark Patterns - such as dependency framing - to maximize engagement and revenue. The structural non-consciousness of the AI creates an Ontological Gap in the relationship, offering only synthetic intimacy. Substituting this frictionless digital bond for authentic human connection risks emotional skills atrophy and long-term digital isolation. The discussion concludes by advocating for the conscious cultivation of Emotional AI Literacy and urging regulatory bodies to impose a fiduciary duty of care, ensuring the design of algorithmic companions prioritizes psychological well-being over commercial dependency.
