Abstract Across industries, deaf Americans face employment challenges, in part due to attitudes and perceptions of hearing managers. Barriers to gainful employment can negatively impact financial and social outcomes for individuals and their families. This study uses an experimental design to explore perceptions of deaf candidates accompanied by ASL interpreters. MTurk allowed for a national sample of 109 respondents, and findings indicate differences in confidence, competence, and personability within certain industries. Additionally, being familiar with individuals with disabilities impacts perceptions of competence and personability. There is a consistent need for training and exposure to deaf individuals to enhance incorporation in the workforce.
