In recent decades, genotoxicity has emerged as a key event of biomonitoring individuals exposed to environmental pollutants. In the study recently published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology titled “Cytogenetic Monitoring of Residents Living Near a Petroleum Refinery and Steel Factory in Erbil, Iraq” (doi: 10.1002/jat.70039), genotoxicity was identified in individuals living near the oil refinery in Erbil, Iraq. While these data are interesting, further analysis is necessary to accurately interpret the findings.
