Fifteen trenches were excavated with a total combined area of 985m amounting to c.10.5% of the 9515m proposed development area. Thirteen of these trenches (Tr 1-13) were part of the original trenching plan with two additional trenches (Tr 14 and 15) being excavated to further investigate two possible curvilinear features identified in Trench 8. One of these trenches (Tr 15) fell just outwith the Phase 1 area. Modern overburden and subsoil deposits were removed by a mechanical excavator equipped with a wide smooth-bladed ditching bucket. All ground-breaking work was carried out under constant archaeological supervision. Any further work required to fulfil the objectives of the evaluation were caried out by hand. All excavation and on-site recording was carried out according to standard CFA procedures, principally by drawing, by photography and by completing standard CFA record forms. The stratification of all excavated areas was recorded whether or not significant archaeological deposits were identified. An archaeological trial trenching evaluation was carried out at Land North-West of Coldingham Primary School, Bogangreen School Road, Coldingham, Scottish Borders in advance of Phase 1 of a proposed residential development. The evaluation identified extensive evidence of 19th century agricultural improvements in the form of ceramic horseshoe drains, ceramic cylinder drains, rubble drains, and shallow surface drains, but there were no features, artefacts, or deposits of archaeological significance identified.
