archaeological monitoring and recording Archaeological monitoring & recording (watching brief) was carried out in April 2025 at Whiteshoots Cottage, Whiteshoots Hill, Bourton on the Water, Gloucestershire, during groundworks for a new development. The HER showed that the site lies in area of archaeological potential, Iron Age and Romano-British period remains having been recorded within the vicinity of the site during previous archaeological interventions. The results of the excavation were negative, the stratigraphy comprised initially the natural substrate sloping down from west to east and south to north following the natural topography towards Bourton Bridge. This was overlain by a thick garden soil which appears to have accumulated mostly though later deposition beginning in the early modern period. In the absence of archaeological deposits or features the evidence shows that that the area of the excavation and probably its immediate surroundings lies outside the areas of Iron Age and Roman activity identified during the earlier interventions. The lack of finds recovered from the excavations supports this hypothesis.
