Archaeological monitoring and recording Archaeological recording (watching brief) was carried out during January 2024 at 42 Foregate Street, Worcester during the construction of a residential building to the rear of the property. The stratigraphic sequence of deposits observed during the excavation of the foundations for the new building was similar to that recorded during the previous investigation where post holes dated to the Late C1/C2 AD were recorded indicating a probable structure. No further archaeological deposits were observed during the course of the excavation, instead a series of C18 and C19 brick structures were recorded comprising a culvert probably connected to the house, walls related to the probable cellars of former buildings and a domed subterranean structure at the very rear of the site possibly built as a coal store. Some of the walls correspond with buildings shown on the OS 1886 map.
