Abstract This paper examines judicial decision support systems based on artificial intelligence and their implications for judicial independence within contemporary legal systems. As courts increasingly adopt AI-driven tools to analyze legal texts, evaluate evidence, predict case outcomes, and enhance case management efficiency, fundamental questions arise regarding the proper balance between technological assistance and the judge’s discretionary authority. While such systems promise greater efficiency, consistency, and data-driven insight, they also pose significant risks related to over-reliance, algorithmic opacity, embedded bias, and potential erosion of judicial autonomy. The study adopts a doctrinal and analytical approach to explore the conceptual foundations of AI-based judicial decision support systems, the technologies underlying them—such as machine learning and natural language processing—and their practical applications within judicial processes. Particular attention is given to the distinction between decision support and decision substitution, emphasizing that AI systems must function as auxiliary tools rather than authoritative decision-makers. Through a comparative analysis of international experiences in India, China, and the United States, the paper highlights divergent models of AI integration in judicial systems and the legal, ethical, and institutional challenges accompanying each approach. These case studies reveal both the transformative potential of AI and the necessity of robust safeguards to preserve transparency, accountability, and fair trial guarantees. The paper concludes by proposing a principled framework for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into judicial decision-making. This framework prioritizes judicial independence, human oversight, algorithmic transparency, explainable AI, and clear legal and ethical standards. Ultimately, the study argues that the legitimacy of AI in the judiciary depends not on replacing human judgment but on reinforcing the judge’s central role in achieving justice and upholding the rule of law.
