The article is devoted to the study of such a specific process of phraseological derivation, as the formation of new phraseological units by separating individual components from existing stable combinations of words. The relevance of the study is due to the continuous dynamic development of the vocabulary and phraseology of modern French. Traditionally, phraseologisms are seen as fixed structures, but the study of modern Internet media, periodicals, dictionaries, blogs and websites allows to identify the reverse process consisting in high mobility, and demonstrate the derivative potential of their components. The article examines in detail the state of transition between different types of language units and expansion of their compatibility. The study is based on an analysis of contemporary contextual examples demonstrating the living evolution of the phraseological foundation and mechanisms of phraseological derivation. The study used methods such as analysis of theoretical literature, descriptive method, component analysis of lexical units, observation and generalization. The need to study the characteristics of segmentation of stable expressions is dictated by the need of linguistics in describing new ways of supplementing the phraseological foundation, which allow the language to adapt flexibly to changing communicative demands of society. The novelty of the research is a detailed analysis of the dynamics of transitional states in modern phraseology from a part of a stable word combination of non-phraseological character to an independent phraseological unit, as well as in the identification of the mechanism of transformation of dependent component of a stable expression into an independent «model-template» for creation of an unlimited number of new phraseological combinations. The results of the research in a practical plane can be incorporated into lecture courses on lexicology, phraseology and stylistics, as well as contribute to the further development of the theory of language variability and derivatology.
